What is Tajweed, and why does it matter?

Tajweed (تجويد) means “to improve” or “to make excellent.” In practice, it is the set of rules that governs how each Arabic letter is pronounced when reciting the Quran — where the sound comes from, how long it is held, when it is nasalised, and when it stops. The Prophet ﷺ recited with Tajweed, and reciting this way preserves the meaning: a single mispronounced letter can change a word entirely.

For Muslims in the UK — many of whom speak English as a first language — Tajweed is often the missing link between reading the Quran and reciting it correctly. That is the gap this course is built to close.

The Tajweed rules you will master

Most course pages promise “all the rules.” Here is the actual map you will work through with your teacher:

• Makharij al-Huruf — the precise articulation point of every letter, such as distinguishing ح from ه and ق from ك.
• Sifaat al-Huruf — the characteristics of letters (whispered, heavy, light), such as the heaviness (tafkheem) of ص, ض and ط.
• Noon Sakinah & Tanween — Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab and Ikhfa: when ن merges, converts or hides.
• Meem Sakinah — Idgham, Ikhfa and Izhar Shafawi: the rules of م before certain letters.
• Madd (elongation) — natural and secondary prolongation, holding a vowel 2, 4 or 6 counts.
• Ghunnah — nasalisation from the nose, the buzz in نّ and مّ.
• Qalqalah — the echo or bounce on ق ط ب ج د, as in قُلْ.
• Waqf & Ibtida — where to stop and start correctly, without breaking the meaning.

You will not memorise this as theory — you apply each rule directly on Quranic verses, letter by letter, until it becomes automatic.

Do I need to know Arabic to start a Tajweed course?

No. You need to be able to recognise basic Arabic letters. If you can’t yet, we start you on our Noor Al Bayan or Noorani Qaida reading course first, then move you into Tajweed.

How long does it take to learn Tajweed?

Most beginners cover the core rules in a few months of regular lessons, but true fluency depends on practice. Because lessons are one-to-one, your pace is your own — your teacher sets realistic milestones at your free trial.

Can my child learn Tajweed online?

Yes. Children from age 5 learn with DBS-checked teachers, using short, engaging lessons designed to hold their attention.

Can I request a female teacher?

Yes. Sisters and parents can choose a qualified female teacher.

What do I need for online classes?

A phone, tablet or laptop with a camera and internet, and a copy of the Quran (physical or app). That’s it.

Is the first class really free?

Yes — your first Tajweed class is a free trial that includes a level assessment and a personalised plan, with no obligation to continue.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. On completing your level you receive a certificate, and advanced students can work towards a recognised Ijazah.
